This might interest some of you “builders” out there. I just installed two Sata hard drives that I had taken out of a computer I had been using for a while and they were in RAID 0 configuration. I regularly tested these two drives and they always performed as they should in RAID 0, plenty fast. Well, I got Yara’s, “Missing C drive” virus, and it is a virus, so I decided to install these two Sata drives into my Internet system and here’s where it gets interesting.

Instead of using the dedicated Sata power plugs from the power supply, I decided to use a molex to Sata plug that uses one molex plug and splits that into two Sata plugs to plug into the hard drives. I installed windows on the Sata RAID 0 configuration with no problems and the first thing I did was to run ATTO to test the drives as soon as I got Windows up and running. ATTO hung upon starting the program and I had to Alt Clt Del to shut it down. I did this several times with the same results. So I unplugged one of the Sata power connections from the splitter and plugged that drive into a dedicated Sata plug from the power supply and ATTO ran but with some interesting results. All of my read speeds were double the write speeds. I ran HD tach and the graph had spike dips all over it instead of one smooth line from left to right. I was ready to reformat everything and I unplugged the drive that was using the converter plug and plugged that into the other dedicated power supply plug and presto, I got consistant 128K read and write speeds from ATTO and a smooth line in HD tach. So, power supply plugs can make a dramatic difference. I think it was Dave who had those huge spikes in his RAID 0 tests and I would take a look at the power plugs and the SATA data cables too, just in case.

Interesting. I will have to check how I have my power set up on my satas.  It has been a while since I built it but I think I used at least one connector straight from the power supply and the other was either split or converted from the IDE connector.

Thanks, I will check it out.

I also changed the data cables to ones that have clips on them so they clip into the sockets on the drives and motherboard.
