Ever since I can remember it has always been said to run as little as possible at any time.    Now I have about 40 + processes running at one time.   (Task Manager)
How many do you have?
How few can we get away with?
And what are they?
And how to get rid of them?

Equipment:
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ (2.2 Ghz), MB K8VSEDX, GC Radeon 9800 Pro - 128Mb, Ram 1Gb, HD 200 + 500 + 500 Gb usb backup, DVD Sony & Asus, OP W7 Acronis True Image Home 2010 Studio 8, 10.6(10.8), 14 Sony PC8 DV
Frankly, with your setup, I would not worry about it. Unless specifically called on, none of the 'username' processes are consuming CPU and the memory usage is in the order of 100Mb (out of 4Gb + virtual). Look up 'task manager' in the help and support files if you wish for some light reading.

Of more concern is the chance of some background programs starting when you are in, say, Studio and in the middle of a critical sequence such as an output to DVD. Such programs are internet activity, anti-virus scans, defrags and so on. Some can be set to run at fixed times while others need switching off (and internet disconnected)

If you are having problems that is.

CPU usage at the time I ran task manager = 2%

They're going to vary from person to person. If you want to know more about what process was started by what company, google for Process Explorer. It's free and will give you a wealth of info.

I know what most of them do and I pretty much leave them alone. Sometimes an odd one slips in there and then I will google it. If I don't like it or want it, I find out how it got there and remove it.

On one machine, I run 28 total not counting any apps open at any given time.  It took a lot of fact-finding and trial / error to whittle them down but I have learned some valuable lessons.  Avg. mem usage to support those is 280 mb.

On my other box there's 29 @480 mb.

I usually run "Enditall" before I do any editing and such. This brings me down to about 3% CPU usage running in the background.

Quite surprised that you still have to use enditall just to get down to about 3% Pete.

Guess its a function of the actual software you have chosen to use and run on your machine.

I refuse to jump through hoops to get the machine stable with the CPU picking its nose as long as I have not asked it to do anything.

Here is a longterm (graphs and averages etc cover about 5 minutes) activity report of my machine sitting doing nothing - full AV and Firewall running exactly the same as when I eg edit video

When I asked the question I said I had about 40 + running.
On reading the replies I find I have 66 running.
My box usually runs about up to 3% +/-
I just rendered a project and I ran about 65 to 90%.

KF_daddy.
I had a look at your Project Explorer.  Lots of nice lines and pretty colors.  But what do they all do?   Does not seem to be much info.  No doubt I will find it.

No matter, thanks for the inside on how other folks run.
Now to do some digging on my own.
Thanks.

Just re-reading that statement and I see it is misleading.  What I meant was there does not seem to be much info "on what it all means and how to read Project Explorer"

Any guidance there please?

The program is Process Explorer, not Project Explorer, you may have the wrong one.

Here's a sample. If I see something in task manager that I haven't seen before, I will open process explorer and see what program opened it. I can then determine if I want to leave it or kill it.

The help files give more details but I generally don't delve that deep myself. After a while you know what should be in task manager and what looks out of place. Process explorer, for me anyway, is helpful in deciding what to do about a new process.

Thanks Joe. I meant process explorer.  So I will take it from there.
